Description
The Riviera Maya is Mexico's tourist gateway to the Caribbean Sea. Situated on the Yucatán Peninsula from the Caribbean coastline from Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen, the area also includes a stretch of land approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) inland. The terrain is flat and covered by low tropical jungle. As is common in karst environments, underground rivers have formed by dissolution. Through sinkhole collapses, locally called cenotes, cave divers from around the world have explored and mapped many of the sites.
