Marshes, wetlands and swamps are among our planet’s most diverse and varied habitats. The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, shared almost equally between Georgia and South Carolina, was established in 1927 to provide sanctuary for migratory waterfowl and other birds.

Bernd F. Laeschke is an award-winning journalist and photographer whose career spans more than 30 years. While working as a full-time reporter and on assignments, images and articles appeared in many national and international publications in North America and Western Europe.
